Most mechanical failures are the result of wear — not sudden breakdown.
In lubricated equipment, wear generally falls into four main types:
1. Abrasive wear (cutting)
Caused by hard particles cutting into metal surfaces when contamination or filtration problems exist.
2. Fatigue wear
Occurs when repeated stress causes micro-cracks below the surface, eventually leading to material detachment.
3. Corrosive wear
Happens when chemical reactions (often driven by water, oxidation, or acids) weaken metal surfaces.
4. Spalling (surface fatigue)
A severe form of fatigue where surface fragments break away, often seen in gears and bearings.
What makes oil condition monitoring valuable is that each wear type leaves a different signature in the oil — long before failure occurs.
